When Bad Bunny plays El Muerto in a Spider-Man spinoff film of the same name for Sony, he will become the first live-action Latino star in a Marvel picture.
According to Deadline, the character was chosen by Bad Bunny himself. According to the article, the actor/singer was looking for a superhero project, and after a series of meetings aimed at landing him a lead role, he eventually found the ideal character in El Muerto after combing through Spider-roster Man’s characters.
El Muerto doesn’t have a long history in comic books, having only appeared twice. He was a professional wrestler who faced Spider-Man in a match and was poisoned by the hero by accident. Spidey then assisted El Muerto in defeating his arch-enemy, El Dorado. In terms of abilities, the wrestler wears a mask that grants him superhuman strength. Because Bad Bunny is also a wrestler, the character looks to be a natural fit.

Sanford Panitch, President of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, revealed Bad Bunny’s casting at CinemaCon. He explained, “Sometimes we get lucky with flawless casting.” “We believe audiences will be enthralled by the direction these Marvel characters are taking.” El Muerto will be released in theatres on January 12, 2024, according to Panitch.
Marcus Estrada de la Garcia/El Muerto is a masked wrestler whose supernatural face-covering offers him superpowers. He was created by Peter David and Roger Cruz and first appeared in Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #6 in 2006. Juan-Carlos Sanchez was the next in line to take the title of El Muerto from his father, which was originally a legacy title passed down from generation to generation. Juan-Carlos, on the other hand, was opposed to becoming an El Muerto and refused to combat El Dorado as part of the mask’s ceremony. El Dorado tried to put him to death as a punishment, but Juan-father Carlo gave his life to spare his son. Juan Carlos was given ten years to combat and uncover a superhero because of his father’s bravery. El Dorado would find and kill Juan Carlos if he did not complete this task. Later, El Muerto wrestled Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match in an attempt to reveal his identity.
Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, a Puerto Rican musician, producer, actor, and professional wrestler, goes by the stage name Bad Bunny. “To bring El Muerto to life is wonderful… so exciting,” Ocasio said at CinemaCon. Ocasio’s past acting credentials include a cameo in F9 and a recurring part as Arturo “Kitty” Páez in Narcos: Mexico. This will be his first time directing a film. He has also been on several WWE shows.
Following 2018’s Venom and 2022’s Morbius, El Muerto is the latest Spider-Man enemy to get his film. In January 2023, a feature-length Kraven the Hunter film starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the main Spider-Man villain will be released. Meanwhile, Sony is getting ready to start filming Madame Web, which stars Dakota Johnson as the titular clairvoyant and precognitive mutant, and Sydney Sweeney from Euphoria in a mystery role. Madame Web will be released in theatres on July 7, 2023.
