Netflix has recently announced that in the latter part of 2022, Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure will be streamed on the OTT platform. It would be a new hybrid of live-action and CG animation series. The anime series shows the story of Gudetama, who is a listless Japanese egg character. The upcoming show was introduced as a part of the Netflix Geeked event.
Production of Gudetama:
The character Gudetama, the lazy egg was created by Sanrio in 2013. Sanrio is popularly known for creating Hello Kitty. As per an Anime News Network report, a television series of anime shorts featuring its egg character made its debut on Asa Chan! morning news program in 2014. Apart from the character, Sanrio also developed various Gudetama merchandise like pencils, suitcases, and a mobile game. Then as per the growth in its popularity and for publishing purposes, they brought into the market Gudetama-themed clothing lines, restaurants, a cosmetic line, an EVA Airplane, and a Seibu Railway train.
Comic Book reach:
The character of Gudetama also stepped into the world of comic books. In 2020, by a collaboration of Sanrio and Oni Press, Gudetama: Love for the Lazy was published by Wook-Jin Clark.

In its official notification, Netflix declared Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure as a lethargic, empathetic road movie that focuses on finding one’s parents. It is for everyone who just wants to laze about!
Gudetama has just resigned itself and accepted the fact that it will just end up on someone’s plate. Gudetama just plans on being lazy all the time. But, swept up by the go-getting, overbearing chick Shakipiyo, it finally decides to leave the refrigerator and heads out to explore the world. These opposites, join hands and venture out on an adventure to find their mother, together!
Gudetama joined Sanrio’s popular character line-up in 2013. As described by Sanrio, Gudetama as an egg is considered to be dead to the world and it completely lacks motivation. Gudetama remains unmoved, no matter what cooking method someone uses and puts their efforts into.
The character has appeared in various online short clips of animation. It was in March 2014, that the first animated short got premiered. Then the shorts continued to air on television until the end of 2020. In January 2021, Sanrio also launched a new series of animated shorts titled Gudetama Freestyle on YouTube.
Reception of teaser and trailer:
The short trailer that was released, gave a glimpse of how the animation will look for Gudetama, though not many details have been provided. The number and duration of episodes that Netflix will release remain unknown. Also, fans were not able to find Shakipiyo, as well as any other characters in the trailer. So everything remains ambiguous.
