As the latest addition to the storied lineup, this smartphone seeks to bridge the gap between the nostalgia of past models and the promise of future advancements. With whispers of revolutionary innovations and a sleek, modern design, the iPhone 16e is poised to redefine the smartphone experience. But does it live up to the hype, or does it succumb to the high expectations that have become synonymous with Apple’s iconic brand? In this review, we’ll take a closer look at the iPhone 16e and assess its potential to leave a lasting impression on the tech landscape.”

The iPhone 16e: A Refreshing Addition to Apple’s Lineup

The End of the Road for the iPhone SE and iPhone 14

The Significance of the iPhone 16e’s Name and Price

The last iPhones whose names had a number and a letter were the iPhone XS duo and the more affordable iPhone XR from 2018.

In the years that followed, Apple introduced iPhones with names that featured a number, sometimes accompanied by a Pro designation and, for larger-screen models, a mini, Plus, or Max suffix.

The decidedly retro iPhone SE was the only model to deviate from the above naming trend.

The arrival of the iPhone 16e marks the end of the road for the iPhone SE and the iPhone 14.

Starting at $599, the newcomer is the most affordable new iPhone you can buy today.

More importantly, with the introduction of the 16e, Apple expanded its most up-to-date iPhone lineup (think, the highest model number with or without a Pro moniker) from four to five products for the first time.

Previously, you had to opt for an older iPhone model to save money, so having the most affordable and feature-packed model in the same lineup is a big deal, literally and figuratively.

Design and Performance: A Mix of Old and New

Familiar Design Elements: A Blend of iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 Features

The Action Button and Its Customizable Functions

The iPhone 16e is a curious mixture of old and new design.

Externally, the only visual elements that separate it from the older iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 are the single camera sensor on its back and the presence of an Action Button.

Stefan Vazharov Rear camera, Action Button, and USB-C connector aside, the iPhone 16e is strikingly similar to the iPhone 14.

Its waterproof aluminum and glass enclosure has the same dimensions, and it weighs only about a fifth of an ounce less.

At a glance, it isn’t easy to distinguish the iPhone 16e from the 2022 model it replaces.

The device’s 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display panel with a notch has remained unchanged, too.

The easy-to-notice cutout at the top of its screen for housing the Face ID camera tech dates back to the iPhone X from 2017, so it’s not as modern-looking and useful as the interactive Dynamic Island in today’s more upmarket iPhone models.

Launched alongside the iPhone 14 Pro, the Dynamic Island is at the top of the display and adds useful active app shortcuts.

All subsequent iPhone releases have it, except for the 16e.

How I Tested

I spent a week with the iPhone 16e as my primary phone.

My daily usage pattern included keeping in touch with family and friends by making phone calls and FaceTiming, as well as sending and receiving hundreds of emails and instant messages across multiple platforms.

Spending hours web browsing and scrolling through social media feeds while listening to my Apple Music library was also among my frequent activities.

Of course, I also took hundreds of photos and captured 4K video clips with the 16e to give its camera setup a proper test.

I spent hours gaming with the device, too, running graphics-intensive titles to give its hardware a proper go.

iPhone 16e Review

The iPhone 16e feels like a throwback to simpler phone times.

It’s small, compact, and not too fancy.

The basics done right.

Technically, this is the successor to the iPhone SE, but it comes with some modern upgrades.

A larger 6.1-inch screen, Apple’s latest A18 processor, Face ID instead of a home button, and a USB-C port replaces the old lightning connector.

On the side, the new Action button takes over for the old silent/ringer switch.

You can customize it to do a variety of things like open the camera, recognize a song, toggle the flashlight or even use the camera to create an event in your calendar (my personal favorite).

Camera-wise, it’s pretty simple: there is just one 48-megapixel lens with a 2x zoom option.

No ultra wide, no macro, but that’s ok.

The photos and videos I took still look great for everyday captures – plus you get some other options like portrait mode.

Check out the photos I took with the iPhone 16e below.

I think you’ll be pretty happy with them.

Because it has a recent processor, the iPhone 16e also supports Apple Intelligence.

This lets you rewrite text, tap into ChatGPT, create new emojis and even generate entirely new images in just a few taps.

Of course, there are trade-offs – you won’t get Apple’s Dynamic Island.

The 16e has the old school notch at the top of the screen.

There’s also no Always on Display – when the screen is off, it’s completely dark.

There is wireless charging, but it’s slower than the standard iPhone 16 models, and there’s no Magsafe support unless you add a third-party case.

You also miss out on the UltraWideband chip, so while you can locate AirTags, your phone won’t lead you right to them.

The Wi-Fi is also a bit dated compared to today’s standards.

But none of this really matters.

For $599, it’s hard not to like the iPhone 16e.

This is a phone for people who don’t obsess over specs, don’t need the latest features and just want something that works, and works well.

Already, it’s seeing massive discounts at carriers from free to $5 a month, so at these prices, it’s a solid, capable iPhone that gets the job done without breaking the bank.

The iPhone 16e is available now in black and white.

And in case you’re wondering, the “e” doesn’t officially stand for anything.

Camera Capabilities: A Single 48-Megapixel Lens with 2x Zoom Option

Apple has long been renowned for its camera technology, and the iPhone 16e is no exception. Despite its entry-level status, the iPhone 16e comes equipped with a single 48-megapixel lens, a significant upgrade from its predecessors. This high-resolution sensor captures intricate details, making it a formidable tool for both casual and semi-professional photography.

The 48-megapixel lens is paired with a 2x zoom option, offering versatility in framing shots. Whether you’re capturing a wide landscape or zooming in on distant subjects, the iPhone 16e delivers sharp and clear images. The inclusion of portrait mode further enhances the camera’s capabilities, allowing users to create professional-looking bokeh effects with ease.

In practical terms, the 48-megapixel lens excels in low-light conditions, thanks to Apple’s advanced computational photography techniques. The camera software leverages AI to optimize exposure, focus, and color balance, resulting in vibrant and detailed photos even in challenging lighting situations. This makes the iPhone 16e a reliable companion for everyday photography, whether you’re documenting a family outing or capturing the beauty of a sunset.

Apple Intelligence and Performance

The Power of Apple Intelligence: Rewriting Text, Generating Images, and More

One of the standout features of the iPhone 16e is its integration with Apple Intelligence. This powerful suite of tools leverages advanced AI to enhance user experience in various ways. For instance, Apple Intelligence allows users to rewrite text with a few simple taps. Whether you’re drafting an email, writing a report, or composing a social media post, the AI can help refine your words, ensuring clarity and precision.

Beyond text, Apple Intelligence also enables image generation. Users can create entirely new images by inputting simple descriptions. This feature is particularly useful for creative professionals, marketers, and anyone who needs visually compelling content. The AI can generate images that align with specific themes or moods, making it a versatile tool for various applications.

Another notable feature is the ability to generate new emojis. Users can describe the emoji they want, and the AI will create a custom one, adding a personal touch to communications. This level of customization is a testament to Apple’s commitment to enhancing user experience through innovative technology.

Seamless Performance with the A18 Processor

The iPhone 16e is powered by Apple’s latest A18 processor, which delivers seamless and efficient performance. The A18 is designed to handle multitasking with ease, ensuring smooth transitions between apps and quick loading times. This makes the iPhone 16e an excellent choice for users who need a reliable device for both work and play.

In real-world applications, the A18 processor shines in graphics-intensive tasks. Whether you’re playing high-definition games, editing videos, or running multiple applications simultaneously, the iPhone 16e maintains its performance without lag or overheating. This level of efficiency is particularly impressive given the device’s compact size and affordable price point.

The processor’s optimization extends to battery life as well. The iPhone 16e offers better battery performance compared to its predecessors, thanks to the A18’s energy-efficient design. Users can expect extended usage times, making it a reliable device for long days on the go.

What You Miss Out On: Dynamic Island, Always-On Display, and Magsafe Support

While the iPhone 16e offers a compelling set of features, there are a few trade-offs to consider. One notable omission is the Dynamic Island, a feature introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro. The Dynamic Island provides an interactive and versatile space at the top of the display, allowing users to access quick shortcuts and notifications seamlessly. The iPhone 16e retains the traditional notch design, which, while functional, lacks the modern aesthetic and functionality of the Dynamic Island.

Another feature missing from the iPhone 16e is the Always-On Display. This feature, available on more premium iPhone models, keeps the screen dimly lit to show notifications and essential information without fully waking the device. The iPhone 16e, on the other hand, has a completely dark screen when off, which may be a drawback for users who prefer quick glances at their devices.

Wireless charging on the iPhone 16e is also slower compared to standard iPhone 16 models. While it does support wireless charging, it lacks Magsafe support unless a third-party case is used. This means users might need to rely on traditional cables for faster charging or invest in additional accessories for optimal wireless charging experience.

Additionally, the iPhone 16e does not include the UltraWideband chip, which is present in higher-end models. While this chip enhances the accuracy of locating AirTags, its absence on the iPhone 16e means users may not experience the same level of precision in finding their items. The Wi-Fi capabilities are also slightly dated, which might affect users who require the latest connectivity standards.

Practicality and Value for Money

The iPhone 16e: A Phone for Those Who Want It Simple and Affordable

The iPhone 16e is designed for users who prioritize simplicity and affordability. Priced at $599, it is the most affordable new iPhone available, offering a compelling entry point into Apple’s ecosystem. This price point makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious consumers and those looking to upgrade without breaking the bank.

The iPhone 16e’s design is a blend of old and new, with a familiar form factor that harks back to earlier iPhone models. Its 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, while not featuring the latest Dynamic Island or Always-On Display, remains a high-quality panel that delivers vibrant colors and sharp resolution. The device’s aluminum and glass enclosure is durable and waterproof, ensuring longevity and reliability.

Despite its budget-friendly price, the iPhone 16e does not skimp on essential features. The A18 processor delivers robust performance, capable of handling daily tasks and more demanding applications with ease. The inclusion of Apple Intelligence adds a layer of sophistication, making the device a versatile tool for both personal and professional use.

Trade-Offs and Compromises: Slower Wireless Charging and Dated Wi-Fi

While the iPhone 16e offers a solid set of features, it does come with some compromises. One notable trade-off is the slower wireless charging speed. Unlike the standard iPhone 16 models, the iPhone 16e does not support Magsafe, which means users may need to rely on traditional wired charging or invest in additional accessories for optimal charging experience.

The Wi-Fi capabilities of the iPhone 16e are also dated compared to more recent standards. While it supports Wi-Fi 6, it lacks the latest advancements found in higher-end models. This might be a consideration for users who require the fastest possible wireless connectivity, especially in environments with multiple devices competing for bandwidth.

Discounts and Availability: A Solid, Capable iPhone at an Attractive Price

The iPhone 16e is currently available in black and white, offering users a choice of colors to suit their preferences. Despite its affordability, it is a solid and capable device that delivers on performance and functionality. The device is seeing massive discounts at various carriers, with options ranging from free to $5 a month. These discounts make the iPhone 16e an even more attractive option for budget-conscious consumers.

For those who want a reliable iPhone without the premium price tag, the iPhone 16e is a strong contender. It offers a balance of affordability and functionality, making it a practical choice for a wide range of users. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or someone who simply wants a dependable device for everyday use, the iPhone 16e delivers on all fronts.

In summary, the iPhone 16e bridges the gap between nostalgia and modern innovation. Its design harks back to earlier iPhone models, while its features and performance are firmly rooted in the present. With its 48-megapixel camera, Apple Intelligence, and robust A18 processor, the iPhone 16e offers a compelling package that is both practical and affordable. Despite some trade-offs, such as slower wireless charging and dated Wi-Fi, the iPhone 16e remains a solid choice for users who value simplicity and reliability.
