What is hantavirus? Understanding the rare and deadly disease

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), commonly referred to as hantavirus disease, is a respiratory disease caused by hantaviruses which are carried by several types of rodents. It is a rare condition in the US, with most cases concentrated in the western states of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah.

The New Mexico Department of Health says hantaviruses are spread by the saliva, droppings and urine of infected rodents, which in North America is most likely to be the eastern deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus). The virus is often transmitted through the air when people sweep out sheds or clean closets where mice have been living, or by eating food contaminated with mouse droppings.

It is not transmissible from person to person, according to Dr. Heather Jarrell, chief medical examiner for New Mexico. The symptoms of HPS include fatigue, fever, and myalgia (muscle aches), with about half of patients also experiencing malaise, headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, chills, sweats, and abdominal problems including nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms, which vary between people, are thought to develop between one and eight weeks after exposure and the likelihood of death in the southwest of the US is about 38% to 50%. Early symptoms of HPS include fatigue, fever, and myalgia (muscle aches), with about half of patients also experiencing malaise, headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, chills, sweats, and abdominal problems including nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Later symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, and pneumonia (lungs filling with fluid). Rapid breathing and rapid heartbeat are also typical. At this stage, the disease progresses rapidly, requiring hospital treatment and often mechanical ventilation to help with breathing.

Gene Hackman’s Life and Legacy

Gene Hackman was a former Marine whose work on screen began with an uncredited TV role in 1961. Acting became his career for many years, and he went on to play villains, heroes and antiheroes in more than 80 films spanning a range of genres.

He was best known by many for playing evil genius Lex Luthor in the Superman films in the late 1970s and ’80s, and won Oscars for his performances in The French Connection and Unforgiven. Be the first to get Breaking News Install the Sky News app for free

After roles in The Royal Tenenbaums, Behind Enemy Lines and Runaway Jury in the 2000s, he left acting behind after his final film, Welcome To Mooseport. He and Arakawa, a pianist, had been together since the mid-1980s.

Investigation and Aftermath

The couple were found dead on 26 February in separate rooms of their Santa Fe home, along with one of their dogs, and on Friday the results of medical tests were released in New Mexico.

Two-time Oscar winner Hackman was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s when he died of heart disease, and it was likely he was at home alone with the body of his wife for a week before he passed away himself.

Dr. Jarrell said there was a call to the medical concierge service which lasted under two minutes, and a follow-up call from them later that afternoon was missed.

The police footage shows officers checking the home and finding no signs of forced entry or other suspicious signs.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the recent release of bodycam footage by investigators into the death of Gene Hackman has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and beyond. The article has delved into the details of the footage, which captures the moments leading up to the actor’s passing, and the subsequent investigation that has followed. The significance of this event cannot be overstated, as it has sparked a wider conversation about the importance of transparency in high-profile cases and the role of technology in modern investigations.

The implications of this incident are far-reaching, with potential consequences for the way in which law enforcement agencies approach sensitive cases in the future. As the world becomes increasingly reliant on technology, it is crucial that we consider the ethical implications of using bodycams and other recording devices in sensitive situations. Furthermore, this incident serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of celebrity culture, where the private lives of public figures are often subject to intense scrutiny.

As we move forward, it is essential that we prioritize respect, empathy, and understanding in our treatment of those in the public eye. Gene Hackman’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through his incredible body of work, but it is our responsibility to ensure that his passing serves as a catalyst for positive change. In the words of Hackman himself, “I come from a tradition of people who have come from nothing, and I think that’s a great advantage.” Let us honor his memory by striving to create a world where privacy, dignity, and compassion are afforded to all, regardless of their status or fame.
