The Good Cop is the first cop comedy-drama in the Netflix Originals library, and critics and fans alike have praised the show. If you're seeking information about The Good Cop season 2, including whether The Good Cop season 2 has been renewed and when The Good Cop season 2 might be available on Netflix, look no further.
In case you missed it, the show is created by the same person who created Monk on USANetwork, and it bears many similarities with that show. Tony Danza and Josh Groban star as a father and son cop duo, one of them is an active cop and the other a disgraced cop.
On September 21st, 2018, Netflix distributed 10 episodes of the show around the world.
Here is everything you need to know about The Good Cop season 2.
After a single season, the show has been officially canceled, there will be no The Good Cop season 2. Despite positive fan reactions, the show is unlikely to have attracted the necessary audience numbers for Netflix to justify a second season.
Josh Groban revealed in a statement that "The Good Cop" will not be renewed for a second season. We owe it to creator Andy Breckman and his co-producers, writers, the great crew, and especially stars Tony Danza and Josh Groban to bring this iconic father-son drama to Netflix.”
The show has now joined an ever-growing list of shows that have been canceled after its first season.
Big Tony, a loving but not exactly honorable former NYPD officer who never followed the rules, starring Danza. TJ (Groban), his son, is a talented, straight-laced NYPD detective who makes it a point to always follow the rules while solving Brooklyn's most difficult crimes. Monica Barbaro, Isiah Whitlock, Jr., and Bill Kottkamp also appeared in the show.
Breckman, the showrunner, and executive producer is the creator of "Monk." Randy Zisk and Howard Klein also served as executive producers, with Danza serving as the producer. The show is based on a format created by YES, an Israeli production company that also serves as executive producers.
The series premiered in September to mixed reviews, with a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 52 percent. “A program with frustratingly little on its mind, ‘The Good Cop,' swiftly establishes its two characters as known personality types and then reiterates who they are, over and again, for ten episodes, with little modulation or development,” Daniel D'Addario wrote in his Variety review. Worse, the show relies on the absolute lack of knowledge of both its two stars and everyone around them for a show that sets up and solves a new mystery every episode.”
Fans who loved the first season and were waiting for The Good Cop season 2 may not like the fact that Netflix has canceled The Good Cop season 2.
The good cop/bad cop combination of Tony Danza and Josh Groban has been busted, but not for the reasons you may assume. For one thing, Danza is fantastic as the crooked cop who was fired in front of the entire department. Tony Sr. is a joke-teller, barroom crooner, and all-around people's man; the kind of delightful wiseguy you'd forgive for any well-intentioned transgressions... unless he's your father, of course. Tony Jr., or TJ (Groban), is the polar opposite of his father — not that he's unlovable; he simply follows every rule, from specific points in the police code (he frequently cites others for "infractions") to implicit but frequently broken social agreements like refusing to pick up an unclaimed quarter.
One is a well-liked evil cop, while the other is an outcast good cop. The odd pair setup is apparent, basic, and surely solid enough to support a crime-of-the-week procedural — or, in this case, a crime-of-the-every-44-minutes-or-so procedural, since this is a Netflix original series with all Season 1 episodes broadcast at once. “The Good Cop” never sets out to be anything more than a pleasant diversion, much like creator Andy Breckman's previous series, “Monk,” which starred another Tony and won a slew of awards. Shaloub (in)famously won three Emmys in the show's first four seasons, and Danza may be nominated for a Golden Globe if audiences respond positively to Breckman's new show.
Groban, on the other hand, will not, and should not be, the namesake of "The Good Cop." The singer-turned-actor has appeared in films ranging from "Crazy Stupid Love" to "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." He's a decent, relatable counterpoint for Danza's enthusiastic energy, and he's perhaps an intentionally insipid foil for Danza's exuberant enthusiasm. But he doesn't add anything to a character that was designed to be a blank slate, and "The Good Cop" doesn't help him out at all. It's like a white canvas on TV, but only the actors get to paint on it, and Groban doesn't even get a brush.
Netflix has canceled The Good Cops season 2. The fans that were waiting for The Good Cops season, 2 will be disappointed.
