Anglea’s story will not be renewed for the 2022-23 television season
. Our Kind of People has been canceled by FOX, and there will be no second season. The first season, which consisted of 12 episodes, ended in January.
Yaya DaCosta, Morris Chestnut, Joe Morton, Nadine Ellis, Lance Gross, and Rhyon Green feature in the soap opera Our Kind of People. Debbi Morgan, L. Scott Caldwell, Raven Goodwin, and Nicole Chanel Williams have recurrent roles alongside Nicole Brown, Kyle Bary, and Alana Bright. The series is set in the aspirational world of Martha’s Vineyard’s Oak Bluffs, a historical bastion where the rich and powerful Black elite have come to play for over 50 years. Angela Vaughn (DaCosta), a strong-willed single mother, sets out to restore her family’s reputation and make a mark with her revolutionary haircare product that celebrates Black women’s innate, natural beauty.
However, she soon finds a horrific secret about her own mother’s background, which turns her world on its head and permanently disturbs this society.
The first season of Our Kind of People, which aired on Tuesday nights, averaged a 0.30 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.35 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). The season averaged a 0.49 demo and 2.08 million viewers in the live+7 day ratings. In the week of delayed watching, the show gained 64 percent and 54 percent, respectively.
Unfortunately for fans of the show, such ratings were reportedly insufficient to secure a renewal. Viewers were left with a cliffhanger, as series co-creator Karin Gist revealed what would have happened if the episode had ended differently.
Nadine Ellis’ Dupont was shot at the end of season one, which finished in January. Gist told Deadline that if the show had been revived, she would have survived a shooting by an assassin who had intended to kill her father Teddy Franklin (Joe Morton).
“What I love about it is that we spent the season bringing the family together,” she explained. “You always have to give families something to root for and a reason to come back.” “By the end of the season, the family has been shattered by the Teddy factor.” So, maybe, Leah’s injury will catalyze for the family to reunite in the future
After one season, Fox has decided to cancel ‘Pivoting.’
A second season would have been more “explosive,” according to Gist. Unfortunately, that will not be seen on Fox.
Lance Gross, Rhyon Nicole Brown, Alana Kay Bright, Kyle Bary, Joe Morton, and Morris Chestnut also star in the series.
The series is a co-production between 20th Television and Fox Entertainment, and is executive produced by Gist and Claire Brown via The Gist of It Productions; Daniels and Marc Velez via Lee Daniels Entertainment; Pam Williams; Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, and Roderick Ferrell via Propagate; and Montreal McKay via Propagate. It is based on Lawrence Otis Graham’s book Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class.
