Following a performance of her blockbuster musical “Company,” in which she stars, legendary singer and actress Patti LuPone yelled out at a Broadway fan in front of a packed audience for not properly donning a face mask.
“Put your mask over your nose; you’re in the theatre for a reason. That’s the norm,” the two-time Tony Award winner informed a theatergoer this week as she sat on a New York City stage with other “Company” cast members “Videos posted to Twitter show cast members for a post-performance conversation.
“Get out if you don’t want to follow the rules. I’m not joking “The audience erupted in applause and cheers when LuPone spoke inside Manhattan’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
“Who do you think you are that you don’t respect the folks who are sitting around you!” said the Broadway legend, mocking the audience member.
“I pay your salary!” shouted a woman in the theater’s second row, to whom LuPone had addressed her rage.
“My wage is paid by you. Bullshit! My salary is paid by Chris Harper!” LuPone answered by mentioning the “Company” producer.
“Do you have any idea who you are?” LuPone exploded once more. “Just cover your nose with your mask.”
The incident occurs months after LuPone, 73, was diagnosed with COVID-19 and had to miss numerous performances of “Company.”
Masks are still compulsory for audience members at all Broadway theatres until at least May 31, despite mask restrictions being largely repealed in New York City and across the country.
